Music Tour 2019
22/07/2019

Forty pupils and five members of staff have just returned from our annual music tour, this time to Reims in France.

After an intense first evening of rehearsals, we spent some time playing circle games and were then treated to the city’s Bastille Day celebrations with a spectacular fireworks display.

The following morning, we went to the beautiful Basilique Saint-Rémi to sing for their Sunday morning Mass.  The regular congregation were very appreciative as they don’t normally have a choir for their services.  We sang music by William Byrd, Charles Villiers Stanford, Anton Bruckner and Sergei Rachmaninov.

In the afternoon we went to a concert hall in Cormontreuil to perform in front of a packed local audience.  This concert contained a mix of choral and solo pieces, including a superb rendition of My house from the musical Matilda by Lauren Hamilton (Yr 8).

In the evening we had some free time to explore Reims city centre.  A small group of us were given permission to sing Stanford’s Beati quorum via in the splendid acoustic of Reims Cathedral.  When darkness fell we then walked back to the city centre to see a stunning light show on the great West wall of the Cathedral.

On the Monday we had a full day at Disneyland Paris – a great time was had by all.

On Tuesday we went to Chalons-en-Champagne for our final concert of the tour.  Managing to fit in time in a local park for our annual rounders match.

The concert was held in a church in Chalons, in aid of their organ restoration project. Three of our organists (Lukas Walls, Phoebe Heywood and Alex Peters, pictured below) had fun playing their pieces on an instrument with only half the stops sounding!

As ever, we had a wonderful music tour and are looking forward to next year’s already.  Do check out our twitter feed (@Ripley_Music) to see videos and more photos from our performances.
